This 25,000 Ton German Battleship is upside down due to her heavy guns making her topple over as she went down. Launched on the 21st February 1914 she was one of the largest dreadnought's the world had ever seen. 575 feet long, 97 feet wide, her armour belt was 13.8 inches thick and the deck had a layer of armour plating 3.8 inches deep. Her guns consisted of ten 12 inch guns in 5 twin turrets, 14 5.9 inch casement guns and 3.45 inch anti-aircraft guns as well as 5 torpedo tubes. Impressive specifications!

She was scuttled with the rest of the German Fleet at 13.15 on the 21st June 1919.

You can dive under her on the port side and see the 12inch guns at the stern. Which is exactly what I did and those guns are huge, probably 3 feet in diameter. The turret is just a huge wall of metal. You definitely need a torch for this dive as everything under the ship is in dark shadow at 34m and the blackness just seems to go on forever under the ship. Lots of deeper holes and access points are there for the trained and properly equipped diver to go in further. It really is an awesome wreck, so big you could easily dive it all week and get in those holes! Large parts of the upturned hull are also accessible due to it being blown open during salvage work offering even more dive options.

If I could only dive one wreck in Scapaflow when I come back, this would be it. The photos don't do it any justice. I was just not concentrating on the camera but enjoying the dive. I'll try harder next time.

Nick Eagle checks his computer in the damaged stern section of the ship. Nearing the end of the dive after seeing the 12inch guns below at 33m, the stern allows a bit more time on the wreck as you ascend to see the rudders, with the top of the hull at about 12m.

More of the damaged Battleship's stern.
